An Autumn Roof Check for Leaves, Wind, and Rain

Autumn is when many Portland-area roofs move from dry summer conditions into months of leaves, needles, wind, and rain. A short check before the debris builds up can reveal drainage problems and small roof failures while the work is still easier to schedule.

1. Look for debris in valleys

Valleys collect water and organic material from more than one roof slope. Leaves and needles can hold moisture against shingles and hide damaged flashing. Clear them with a roof-appropriate method and avoid scraping or walking on shingles that are wet.

2. Check gutters and downspouts

Overflow marks on fascia, damp siding below the gutter, or soil washing out at a downspout outlet are signs that the drainage path needs attention. A clean gutter is helpful, but it also needs proper slope, secure hangers, and a clear discharge point.

3. Scan for wind damage

From the ground, look for missing shingles, lifted corners, exposed underlayment, or loose edge metal after a windstorm. Do not assume a few missing shingles are harmless. Water can enter beneath the surrounding courses and damage the roof deck before a ceiling stain appears.

4. Inspect visible flashing

Chimneys, skylights, wall transitions, and pipe boots create openings in the roof system. Cracked sealant, rust, gaps, or staining nearby deserve a closer look. A targeted flashing repair can be much more manageable when identified before the wet season.

5. Plan for moss and shade

Cooler, wetter days create favorable conditions for moss and algae, particularly on shaded or north-facing slopes. Moss holds moisture against the shingle surface. Gentle treatment and improved maintenance timing are safer approaches than aggressive pressure washing.

6. Watch the trees

Overhanging branches can scratch roofing, drop debris into gutters, and break during wind. Trimming should be handled safely from the ground or by a qualified tree professional. Roofing and tree work are related, but they are not the same job.

7. Check the attic after rain

If it can be accessed safely, look for new stains, damp insulation, condensation, or musty odors after a significant storm. These signs can point to a roof leak, blocked ventilation, or indoor moisture that needs a separate correction.

Schedule before the calendar fills

Autumn work is easier to plan when you do not wait for a crisis. Contact Sunnyside Roofing Services for a maintenance evaluation, leak diagnosis, or written recommendation before the next stretch of heavy rain.
